Have you always wanted to go somewhere exotic, but didn’t want to go through the passport application process? You can, and you’re not alone! There are less known and less crowded choices than Hawaii or Key West. Here’s my list of 5 tropical destinations that do not require a passport… 2 of which I’ve never visited. I’ll let you guess which 2.

US Virgin Islands

Known as America’s Caribbean Paradise, the US Virgin Islands lie just South of the British Virgin Islands and East of Puerto Rico (number 3 on this list). It consists of 3 main islands Saint John, Saint Croix, and Saint Thomas, and numerous other minor islands. Its proximity to the United States is a plus. It only takes about 2 and a half hours from Miami.

Guam

If flying halfway around the globe appeals to you, then Guam is the place to go. A flight from LAX (Los Angeles) to Guam will take roughly 15 hours with a stop in Honolulu. Trust me when I say it’s worth being stuck on a plane for 15 hours. Guam is a US territory located in the Western Pacific between Australia and Japan.

Puerto Rico

Just West of the US Virgin Island lies Puerto Rico. Like the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico has a similar 2 and a half hour flight time from Miami. I’ve known people to enjoy a 4 day weekend in Puerto Rico. This is by far the largest landmass on this list. Being the largest it offers a more diverse landscape than the others, such as mountains, waterfalls and even a tropical rain-forest rich with wildlife.

American Samoa

Looking past the crystal clear ocean water, lush green hills and clear blue skies, the most notable aspect of American Samoa are the people. You will probably never encounter a more friendly or hospitable people in your life… unless you finally get a passport that is. It’s an excuse not only to enjoy paradise, but to immerse yourself among the culture.

Northern Mariana Islands

I cannot say much, because I have never been to the Northern Mariana Islands, but from what I hear, you shouldn’t have any issue. Whether you want to soak up the sun, snorkel and drink Mai Tais on the beach all day, or co to a club and try your luck at the local casino. There’s plenty to do on this tiny island. One thing to note is Guam is only 128 miles South of the Northern Mariana Islands. Since you flew halfway around the world, you might as well fly another 128 miles and visit Guam on the same trip.
