Washington DC experiences a huge influx of tourists every year. Most of them go to experience the sites for which DC is famous for (the Washington Monument, the White House and all of the museums which line the Mall. However, there are many things in Washington not even the locals know about.

1. There’s a Secret Service code word for when the sitting president is having sex. “The President is ‘discussing the Bosnian problem’ and cannot be disturbed”

 

2. Alligators have been kept as pets at the White House.

 

3. At one point, the Washington Monument used to be the tallest building in the world in 1884 until the Eiffel Tower claimed that prize in 1889. Still though, standing at 555 feet, 5 1/8 inches it’s still tallest obelisk in the world to date.

 

4. The largest library in the world is the Library of Congress. The library holds 162 million objects and receives 12,000 items each day.

 

5. Washington, D.C. gets more rain than Seattle or London

 

6. Darth Vader’s Bust adorns the outside of the Washington Cathedral

 

7. So far, only one president is buried in Washington, D.C.. Woodrow Wilson is buried in the Washington Cathedral.

 

8. DC’s Metro is the Second Busiest in the United States

 

9. There is a crypt underneath the Capitol Building. It was meant for George Washington, but he eventually preferred to be buried at his home Mt Vernon

 

10. D.C. has a spy museum. The International Spy Museum.
